The Sustainable Development Unit (SDU) in the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Sustainable Development and Culture is beginning a new phase of the Small Grants Program (SGP) of the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

During a 2-day Stakeholder Consultation, the Executive Director of Conservation International (CI); Mr. Olivier Langard and the Managing Director of the Critical Ecosystems Partnership Fund (CEPF); Mr. Jack Tordoff, introduced participants representing Government Agencies, Non-Governmental Organisations, Faith Based Organisations and Other Civil Society Groups to the Small Grants Programme 2.0. Stakeholders were able to learn about financing opportunities and technical-administrative support relevant to global environmental problems.

The expectation of SGP is for communities and local groups to have an integral role in carrying out activities that will have a significant impact on improving quality of life and the environment. The programme is focused on 5 thematic areas that are best suited to national environmental priorities. The 5 thematic areas are: Climate Change, Biodiversity, International Waters, Land Degradation and Chemicals and Waste.

Stakeholders raised their challenges, concerns and gave suggestions as the country moves forward in promoting environmental stewardship in SVG.
