The National Commission for UNESCO, in collaboration with the Department of Culture within the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Sustainable Development and Culture, hosted the official launch of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Initiative at a ceremony that brought together government officials, cultural stakeholders, and members of the public, at the conference room in the Kingstown Public Library.
The programme opened with an opening prayer, followed by the stirring rendition of the National Anthem by Hannah Archibald. Attendees were welcomed with remarks from Director of Culture, Maxine Browne, and UNESCO Representative, Janeil Henry-Rose, who underscored the significance of safeguarding traditions and practices that define the Vincentian identity.
A cultural performance by Tyrique Haywood enriched the ceremony, offering a vivid reminder of the living traditions that this initiative seeks to preserve and promote.
Remarks were delivered by Dr. Tamira Browne, Permanent Secretary (Ag.) in the Ministry of Tourism, Sustainable Development and Culture who highlighted the critical linkages between culture, education, and sustainable development.
The event concluded the Government’s and UNESCO’s shared commitment to protecting intangible cultural heritage for present and future generations.
The Intangible Cultural Heritage Initiative will focus on identifying, documenting, and safeguarding elements of Vincentian culture that may be at risk of fading, while empowering communities to take ownership of their traditions. From storytelling and festivals to traditional knowledge and craft, the initiative will ensure that Saint Vincent and the Grenadines continues to cherish and celebrate its cultural diversity.
Speaking at the launch, officials emphasised the project’s guiding vision: “Safeguarding the Past, Enriching the Future.”
